August, a new month and a new set of books that I hope to be reading! Seeing as I am just starting back up I didn’t want to overwhelm myself so I set a respectable four books for my August hopefuls. These are all books that I am really excited to dive into so I doubt that I will go back into my reading slump. So let’s jump into the books that I am planning on reading in August!
Sightwitch- Susan Dennard
I only bought this book recently (in my Bookoutlet Haul which will go up next week) and I’ve heard people say it was important to read this one before heading into Bloodwitch. It looks like it is going to touch on Ryber’s backstory and how she met Kullen. I like that this book isn’t following one of our four main characters. I’m hoping that this novella gives us more information on the Witchlands world as well as answers some of my questions. I didn’t peg Ryber as a Sightwitch (albeit one without the Sight) until I read the synopsis. But now that I look back I can see the small signs; her deck of essentially tarot cards, certain things she has said and her interest in history. Regardless I am super excited to have any reason to dive back into the Witchlands world. If you want to read my reviews for the previous books you can do so here.
Bloodwitch- Susan Dennard
I have been meaning to read this book since it came out because the Witchlands series is my second favourite series of all time. But because I didn’t want to read it before Sightwitch (which I didn’t own until recently) it ended up getting pushed further and further away. But I am going to finally read this month! I am desperately afraid of getting spoiled and have managed to avoid it thus far but it cannot be put off any longer.
Baeduan is one of my two favourite characters (the other being Iseult) and it is one of the books I am most looking forward to in this series. I am ready to learn his entire backstory, see more of him and Iz and Owl and their family dynamic. I feel like we are going to definitely see more of Esme and his father in this book. All I know from people’s reactions is that they were devastated by something that happened and that terrifies me. I am also worried about how I have MONTHS until the next book and if this book will kill me. But, I will read this book as soon as possible!
Descendant of the Crane- Joan He
I recently purchased this book because I’ve really been into Asian inspired books and wanted to add it to my August reading hopefuls. This book just seems to tick all of my boxes: magic, court intrigue, mystery, forbidden romance, action and a badass female character. It is going to be interesting to see how our princess is going to manage running the country (it isn’t stated if she is an only child or not) and solving her father’s murder. I hope to see a ton of back stabbing and double meanings in the court intrigue. If the story is as good as this STUNNING cover then I will fall in love! I also really want to know who is the descendant of the crane and what it represents. Anyways, I’m really looking forward to reading this.
The Girl King- Mimi Yu
And on to the last book I want to read in my August hopefuls! To finish off my newest addition to the asian fantasy section of my shelf is The Girl King. This reminds me of the One Dark Throne series. Another book that looks to be high action with a bunch of court intrigue. What really drew me to this book was the fact that it has sisters who are pitted against each other for supremacy and the crown. It will be interesting to see the two different storylines and who I will root for to win in the end.
So what are your guys August hopefuls? Or at least planning to? I didn’t want to overwhelm myself so I only set a goal of four books. If I happen to fly through them then of course I will add some more to the old TBR pile. What makes me really sad is that when I finish these books I will have to wait until next year for the next addition in the Witchlands series and I have no more asian fantasy books to read. If you have any other recommendations to give me, please tell me in the comments below. I would love to add some new books to my growing collection!
